The spiritual discipline of nature in the modern world

When we seek to strengthen our connection with God, we often fail to notice how the Holy Spirit can reveal itself. The presence of God though ever present around us and in us shines brightly in the world – a truth that holds importance in our modern society dominated by city life and technology.

Imagine the difference between rushing through a subway station and strolling through a blossoming garden. While God’s love envelops us in both scenarios the latter offers an opportunity for rejuvenation, contemplation, and renewal. The gentle rustle of leaves the sweet fragrance of flowers and the warmth of sunlight touch our souls in ways that bustling cityscapes seldom do.

 Consider the call of seagulls versus the blare of sirens. In these sounds we discern hints of God’s presence encouraging us to pause and reflect. This concept is not merely poetic; it is firmly rooted in scripture;

"The whole earth is filled with his glory!" (Isaiah 6;3 NLT)

"Christ... Ascended higher, than all heavens to fill every corner of creation with himself." (Ephesians 4;9–10 NLT)

These verses remind us that we can sense the presence of God everywhere whether in the expanse of the universe or the intricate beauty of a dewdrop.

The timeless wisdom of Psalm 23 emphasizes this notion. In these verses David speaks about finding comfort not within walls but in the midst of nature;

"The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He makes me lie down in pastures he leads me beside waters he refreshes my soul." (Psalm 23;1–3 NIV)

It's worth noting that this isn't, about methods. God could have chosen settings for David’s rejuvenation – a palace, a friend’s cozy home or the lively streets of Jerusalem. However, nature was specifically chosen as the setting for revival. This natural sanctuary, brimming with life and grandeur possesses the power to revitalize and invigorate God’s people.

In light of events such as the COVID-19 escalating concerns, about climate change, this message holds even greater significance. During times when our world faces challenges, many are rediscovering how nature can provide healing and restoration.

The worldwide movement advocating "nature prescriptions " where doctors suggest spending time in nature to improve well-being aligns harmoniously with teachings.

From Japan’s practice of "forest bathing”, to Scotland’s nature prescription initiative, in the Shetland Islands, people worldwide are increasingly recognizing the rejuvenating effects of immersing oneself in the beauty of nature a concept long understood by poets and thinkers.

In the midst of life’s challenges let us not forget the profound invitation to connect with God through His awe-inspiring creation. Whether it’s a park, a backyard garden, or a vast wilderness nature offers us a pathway to encounter the Holy Spirit and find inner renewal.
